While our X1 Plus is designed for cardboard targets, many users have started experimenting with small steel targets—and we’re here to share some tips to make sure you get the best results.
Setting Up Steel Targets on the X1 Plus
Attaching small steel targets to your X1 Plus is a great way to add an audible hit confirmation and improve your training experience. However, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure safety, durability, and effective target response.
1. Don’t Attach the Steel Target Directly to the Mounting Lumber
One key thing we’ve learned from users in the field is that rigidly attaching a steel target directly to a 2x4 or other mounting lumber isn’t ideal. When the steel is fixed too tightly, the impact forces from each shot transfer directly to the mounting structure, causing excessive stress to both the target and the system.
2. Use a Dampening Material Between the Target and the Mount
For the best results, we recommend using some sort of dampener between the steel target and the mounting point - this will absorb the excessive force of the impact on the target.
A spring or piece of rubber can help absorb some of the impact and reduce excessive vibration.

3. Consider the Effects of High-Caliber Rounds
If you’re using higher calibers (.308 and above) with lightweight steel targets (such as small gongs), you’ll notice that each shot causes significant movement. A .308 round, for example, will send a small steel plate swinging for several seconds, which means you’ll need to wait for it to settle before taking your next shot.
Train Smarter with the X1 Plus
The X1 Plus is built for versatility, and shooters are constantly finding new ways to push its limits. If you’re thinking about incorporating steel targets, make sure to test different mounting styles, calibers, and dampening solutions to find what works best for you.
